Going to bed now

This is the earliest I've gone to bed in months. Travel will do that to you. But I'm in Mexico now, and I just wanted to say (type) outloud (on blogspot) that I love this city and I always forget how much I do until we make that first trip from the airport in the car.

Also happy birthday dad, you're 50 years old.

Back in the day

I spent most of my day packing, or running around doing errands preparing for my trip. I leave for the airport in about two hours, and I imagine I will be sleeping on the majority of the flight since I've made the foolish decision to stay up all night. However it's probably better that way anyway because I hate flying these days since I have been searched almost every single time I've been on a plane these last two years. If I am really tired then I don't care about my civil liberties that much.

"Yes, I understand you want me to wait in this corral. Oh, you are going to use the back of your hands to pat down my balls? Fine by me, thank you security officer for keeping me safe."

I made a discovery the other day, and thought it was a fluke so I wasn't going to share it until I was absolutely sure: Peanut Butter & Jam & Chili Powder. It's so awesome. I know some of you are barfing right now, but really it's the greatest thing ever. I recommend "Tajin" brand, or as my gal calls it "Mexican Spice."

Speaking of leaving, if you are a loyal reader to my blog (which google analytics informs me that there are really no loyal readers and that I'm just leading myself on...) I apologize because I will probably be taking a hiatus from blogging during my trip,l seeing as the internet is few and far between in Mexico. Plus I don't really want to spend my vacation in front of a computer screen... Ok, well, maybe a few updates... I don't know, we'll see what happens.

To any friends of mine reading: Happy Holidays, Merry Christmas, Happy Hannukah, Happy Kwanza, Have a Terrible Festivus, and Happy New Year. New Years and Halloween are my favorite holidays, so I'm definitely looking forward to that.

Oh, and if you read my blog, don't be too shy to comment. It will keep my hopes up and inspire me to keep writing... unless of course you are my mother, in which case if I find out you've been reading my blog I will immediately shut it down... Haha.

Good morning and good night.

Happy Holidays an' shit.

That's really all I have to say. Also if you are my friend and in town from school give me a call today because I got out of town tomorrow, and I won't be back for quite some time.

Also, why trees grow leaves? Well, it's a place holder lyric for a song that got stuck in my head. Now I endlessly have the words "Trees grow leaves, grass grows grows grows grows grows" stuck in my head. If you heard how catchy the song was you would too.

In other news I watched "Jingle all the Way" today, and I forgot how awesome 90's fashion was. Just thought I'd shout you out nineties, I love you like I used to love Minnesota 9 which later became UPN which later became FOX 9. But before all of that it had Brian Z hosting cartoons after school, like Dark Wing Duck and Bonkers the Cat... I'm going to sleep, but you should really spend a few hours reading the Bonkers! fansite with awesome music.

(I tried to find a picture of Brian hosting a show, but to no avail. However, he is now a young men ministries coordinator in Maplewood... so instead I'll hold it down with Robyne Robinson).

Look at Jeff Passolt... He's not keepin' it as real as Robyne.
Haha:

Trivia
Robyne is sometimes confused with Robin Roberts, an anchor on ABC's Good Morning America, and Fox 32's (Chicago) Robin Robinson. She also dated Robin Robinson's ex-husband Terry Brantley

That's the easiest way to remember your new girlfriend's name I guess.

Hooray

I just power-arted. Fueled only by one peanut butter and strawberry jam sandwich, I managed to make it through the day. I just worked 4 hours straight on a piece of art, a 7 foot by 3 foot drawing. It turned out to my liking and was actually fun to work on. Now I have to write my artist statement for that project and I will have successfully completed another semester. The only obstacle lying in my way is going to be catching the bus to get to school by 8...

Also, I need to remember to post the book list.

That is all, just thought I would share that with anyone else who is awake and enduring the finals struggle.

RAGETHOVEN: A-Minor Threat

This is what I was able to scrounge up from my old email. This movie started in highschool when my advisory took a field trip to the Mall of America. Since I roll with a bunch of poor cut-ups, we spent the entire time imagining an action movie starring Vin Diesel, Lucy Liu, Jackie Chan, Jet-Li, Pamela Anderson, Ving Rhames, Dave Chapelle and various others. It was one of the funniest movie ideas I've ever heard. Better than "Snakes on a Plane."

The set up: Vin Diesel is Rage Thoven, a descendant of Beethoven, and long time concert pianist. His father dies in a piano related accident, causing Rage to become a recluse and move to a secluded cabin, vowing never to play piano again.

Meanwhile, maniacal mall owneer Ving Rhames plans to hold the world hostage by threatening a nuclear attack. His missles are the giant christmas trees on display at the Mall of America every holiday season, (there is also always a grand piano positioned between the two).

Jet-Li and Dave Chappelle run competing cany-stores on the lower level of the mall, (Sweet Treats and Jawbreakers). They have gang shoot outs and confrontations regularly. Jackie-Chan is Jet Li's screwball cousin.

Pamela Anderson plays Ving Rhames' airheaded mistress.

Lucy Liu plays undercover CIA agent working at Hooters on the 4th floor.

The story begins with Rage fighting cyborgs. This will never be explained. He then gets contacted to save the world by the CIA, but can't bring himself to do it because of his past piano catastrophes.

RAGETHOVEN: A MINOR THREAT:

Vin Diesel is attacked by two men wearing pilot uniforms, military style jumpsuits. They are all punching eachother. Then Rage (Vin) throws the two men out of the cargo bay, and they fall through the sky. He jumps out (no parachute) and punches them simultaneusly in mid air, causing them to spin like tops as they fall.

Cut to Rage landing on his feet in a wintery forest scene, crouching down. As he stands up we see behind hime the two spinning attackers hit the ground and explode.

Rage: Hmm (laugh), robots. Rage begins to walk through the woods, ankle deep in snow.

Title rolls with intense ochestra hit "Rage Thoven: A Minor Threat."

We cut back to Rage, walking through the woods, with close shots to his face, and sweeping aerial views of the wintery scene. In the distance, a single log cabin.Right before Rage reaches the cabin, he stops, looks dead at the camera.

Cut to a giant grizzly bear. An intense face off begins, then the bear lunges at Rage, and he wrestles it around the woods. Cut to the bear's head, rages hands around it's neck, choking the bear. As he chokes, overlay piano keys so it looks like his hands are on a piano. Rage freaks out, screams, looks around nervously, and runs into his cabin.

End Scene

Be on the look out for this movie, say... in 2012, when most of these actors haven't had work in years and are willing to be part of a low budget but hilarious movie.

Today:

Was rough, but good.

I got stuck in a traffic jam on the bus and spent an hour and a half crawling through traffic with that weird Minneapolis guy that I always see on the bus. He usually wears a white suit, a head band, and has twisted hair popping out. You've seen him in Uptown... you know who I'm talking about.

Hahaha... Holy shit. I just searched "White suit headband Minneapolis" in Google and it found the guy... Hahaha.

That's too good to be true. Like I was saying I always see this guy on the bus and also at Walker Art Center openings. This summer I spent another long bus ride sitting next to him on the 4K and he spent the entire time calling his friends on his tracfone, inviting them to a bar to see his new painting. I remember this because I: A) Always see him B)Realized it was strange that instead of having his contacts entered into his phone or a little black book of numbers he had a plastic Target bag full of different scraps of paper with names and numbers written on them. Google says this man is Scott Seekins...

Man, isn't that something. By dressing in an unusal fashion I was able to locate this character. I should start dressing in an unsual and recognizable way, so that when someone is writing their blog they can be filled with joy and the amazement of Google search. Here's an article about Scott... I guess I'm not the only one that took notice.

I was originally going to post an anecdote about Smurfs, Pikachus and Bros, and how they all use their respective proper-nouns as a sort of Madlib insert for their conversation. But this Scott Seekins thing blew my mind, and I think I'll leave it at that... and at this:

I found you out doggy... Except I can't find a clip from my old Saturday Night Fever soundtrack... Let me keep searching...

This link is the bridge between these two. Click play on the first track (but don't buy it accidentally... unless you want a 0.09 cent charge on your credit card with a $2.00 surcharge...

I was just thinking about how I bought the soundtrack to Saturday Night Fever in 7th grade when I went to Mexico at a VIPS (pronounced "veeps") restaurant and Sam-Goody-esque store... (Yeah, they do it like that in Mexico). And when I heard "Stress" I said to myself, "Self, you know this sample. Dig deep in your brain, what is it..." Self responded. Good night.

More things I want to do with my life

But these are not as serious... well, yes, but I guess these are generally more fun:

1.Start shaving with a straight razor

Nobody does this anymore, but I remember the two times I've been given a shave at a barber they used the a straight razor, and the routine and sort of calming reverance given to the activity of shaving with a straight razor is much more appealing to me than a man with a gruff voice shouting "Mach 3 Turbo" at me. However, this is an expensive start-up. I've considered asking for a straight razor, strop, badger hair brush and the like for birthdays and Christmas before, but it seems like I should just probably hold off until I have the money to venture into more ridiculous hobbies.

2. Learn a plethora of drinks which I can mix at a moments notice.

Not only will it impress my friends, but I won't be stuck drinking rum & cokes like some of the people I know. (You know you're out there, admit it). I think the first few I am going to attempt to memorize are the Manhattan, Bobby Burns, any good Martini, a Rum Collins (which Meg and I began to master at school until our bundle of mint turned into a hamster...) and a Gimlet.

3. Parkour.

This one is crazy, and I already beat the shit out of my body doing it, but there is nothing like reliving childhood playground endevors like the sport of parkour. It involves moving from point A to point B as quickly and effortlessly as possible, and after going to my first jam realized it is probably the only thing that will keep me motivated to excerise for the next 50 years.

4.Learn all the languages I started off but got too lazy to continue.

5.Build a nice home studio.

Or a place to make things, whether it be art or music. Then hopefully convince my friends to drop by whenever they want to make stuff. But the recording studio is a must.

6.Write a script for a movie or television.

I started this many times but never finished. Although it may in part be because I was writing the hilarious but terrible "Ragethoven: A Minor Threat." It's saved on my email, I'll have to post it sometime.

7. Open up a Mexican snack cart.

Sell cucumber spears and fruit with chili and lime, real chalupas, semitas etc etc. Part of the reason I want to do this however is so that I will finally have a place where I can eat my favorite childhood snacks. However, as evidenced by Meaghan's total disgust with me after I poured chili flakes on my bowl of fruit the United States of Minnesota might not be ready for it yet... But then they'll be missing out on coctel de camarones.

There we go, some more fun things...

December 15, 2008

PS:

I'm going to Mexico in a week from today, and definitely looking forward to these things.

How many inches?!?

That is referring to the snow.

I just thought I'd explain something...

I was born near the equator. Usually I don't mind the cold too much, but some days I just want to kick mother nature down a flight of stairs. I checked the weather today to see about trying to set up a sledding club excursion, and it read:

-4 degrees and sunny (real feel -28)
Really? Are you kidding me. Sometimes people think, "Oh, -28 isn't that bad." But then you have to do our stupid math, and realize that that is actually 60 degrees below freezing. 100 degrees below comfortable. I can't really fathom that people ever made a city here. Doesn't anyone know that the South is warm. Couldn't we just leave the northern landmasses as a wilderness reserve?

Okay, usually I wouldn't be bothered that much by -28. Okay, whatever. Except I'm kicking myself for leaving NYU right about now because New York is 65 degrees and partly sunny. And how about home? Mexcio City is 70 degrees. So Mexico City is roughly 100 degrees warmer than it is outside my window at this very moment. And I am off to go work in my friend Daniel Chen's garage building canvases for children...

Later today will be all homework and stuff. I'm going to try to do some internet trolling later on because I want to put together a blog post that isn't about myself, plus if it's art related I'll double post it to the Walker website and get paid for my time... haha.

Anyone that wants to join sledding club click here.

Today was a good day

Imagine Ice Cube's "Today Was A Good Day" playing right about now. That's it. Really get into it... matter of fact, hold up a sec... (internet searching, internet searching... bleeep bleeep bleeep)...

Here you go:

Just hit play on that and continue reading. It will serve as the background music for this post.

When I woke up this morning I was greeted by a really gray sky, which made me go back to sleep. I figured it was still pretty early in the morning. It turns out, today's weather was just really awful. By aweful I mean sleet and snow and a -40 degree windchill. I took down a long list of numbers the other day to try and start a sledding club, and the first sledding excursion was meant for this afternoon. However, I quickly cancelled it because I love sledding, but not enough to die of hypothermia.

I got dressed and talked to my mom, who I had arranged with earlier to receive a ride to Guitar Center, who were having a sale. I walked in, looked at the workstation, and picked up the beautiful Yamaha MM6. It is cheap (well, compared to other workstations) and it sounds great, plus now I don't have to trek to St. Paul to tinker around on a piano. (For those of you that don't know, I rarely buy anything: A) Because I have no money and B) Because I don't really like to have a lot of stuff. However, it was my birthday recently, so, it felt alright, that and I got a little help from ma dukes and Pablo).

After Guitar Center I went to help my mom with her Target/Grocery shopping, which was a part of the agreement on me receiving a ride. It was cool though, I picked the right day because it was free food samples day and I had some bomb apple cider. I went back three times and on the third I felt complelled to tell the lady I would buy some because I felt guilty. So I carried the apple-cider brewing kit around to the opposite side of the store and deposited it among the deodorant. I don't own a coffee maker and I definitely wouldn't buy a 10 dollar pack of apple-cider spice.

I got home, set up my work station and just went crazy with the arpeggiator for about an hour. Then I realized that I really had a lot of stuff to do so I managed to pull myself away and do the dishes, sweep the floors, take out the trash, and so forth. Oh, and laundry too.

Luckily while doing this I happened to turn on the television and catch a great episode of Law & Order Criminal Intent. If you know me well enough you know I love this show. This is what my television loves break down to:

-Law & Order Criminal Intent
-Good Eats
-Arrested Development
-Antiques Roadshow
-The Office (although this season's been a bit disappointing)

I also watch a lot of Flip that House... or I used to. I don't love that one though, I was just interested when my job was construction and I was primarily dealing with flipping houses (rather apartments)... Oh, to be back in an economy where flipping houses was viable...

Also I caught up on my Netflix this weekend and watched "Closer," "Who Killed the Electric Car," and "The Evil Dead." These movies were all good, although "Who Killed the Electric Car" just got depressing and then boring towards the end. It dragged on, and that drawn out death of the electric car was unfortunately not good viewing. I have never seen "The Evil Dead" before and I have to admit that I loved it. Pretty amazing special effects for the 80's, and it was a good combo of funny/b-movie terrible/awesome/scary. Along with sledding club I think I have to start a zombie movie netflix night... that or just invite over fellow zombie enthusiast Alex Brown.

So, to recap, although the weather outside if frightful, my MM6 is so delightful, and as long as I've no place to go, let it snow let it snow let it snow...

Happy Holidays and stuff.

Goodnight

COLORS might be my favorite magazine. I just took a peek at an issue from off of my bookshelf and I decided that the layout is beautiful, and the topics are interesting. I also really think that the best looking magazine around is Wired. They must have one of the most talented art directors and an amazing graphic design team... It's really well put together. By far the most displeasing magazine (at least aesthetically) is Paste. Seven fonts of different sizes and no continuity throughout your magazine, plus clashing colors and really poorly designed jumps make me hate it. Absolutely.

(EDIT: When I went looking for the url to Paste's website so I could link it I also decided that although I am more of a fan of their website layout than their magazine, it is still way too clustered and cluttered and small).

Sorry, that was rather strange, but one thought led to the next.
I was thinking about recording a song just now... but then my eyelids got heavy very quickly and I decided against it.

To do list:
1. Call NYU for a transcript before winter break.
2. UMN transcript before winter break
3. High school transcript and ACT scores.

Sorry to share that with everyone but it is convenient to post to do lists on your blogs because then you can reach them anywhere that you have the internet.

I'm working vigorously on lyrics to a song and I keep stumbling at one part, but I think it is my key change that it throwing me off. I have to maybe take the drums out so I can write something and put them back in afterward...

This post is uneventful, but if you learned anything read COLORS. It might offend some people but I think it's worth sifting through discomfort.

And with that I shall close my eyes and sleep.

December 12, 2008

I'm at work

And this is my jam:

Things I want to do in life

I'm trying to be more regular about posting to this thing, as it is a nice way to keep in touch, and to share things on my mind, whether it be with no one or some one.

I was thinking while paging through a SCAD catalogue that I got in the mail today about all the things I want to do in life, and it struck me as unfortunate that most people have a lot of dreams but end up settling on just a few and then believe the rest of them are unattainable or that they don't have time for them.

Then you have a different problem with people like me who spend so much time deciding and changing their mind about the goals and milestones they hope to achieve that they are going 1000 different directions at a time. But I think I prefer the latter. I may not be achieving my goals and dreams and aspiration quickly, but I am slowly building each one of them up. Here are some things I plan on accomplishing:

Building my own house from the blueprints on up
Finally finishing these albums I'm working on
Getting my BFA and MFA
Eating something delicious everyday
Apprenticing at a tattoo shop
Illustrating
Making more movies
Living in at least 5 more cities
Building better relationships with all of my friends
Learn how to play the trumpet
Learn how to play all of my instruments better
Move back east
Eat some Around the Clock breakfast lunch and dinner
Write as much as I used to write in high school
Becoming a regular at a bar/restaurant so I don't have to order
Do a lot of interesting jobs that don't take place indoors

There are a few things on this list I have not started quite yet. But the majority of these things are in the works. Oh, I also forgot to put a ton of stuff because I actually dozed off between the typing of "living in at least 5 more cities," and "building better relationships with friends." Obviously what I should have typed instead was "Go to sleep when you're tired instead of using the Internet."

I watched a netflix movie tonight, "Who Killed the Electric Car?" It grabbed my attention because I had a conversation with someone about 3 years ago where I swore the technology for electric cars already existed and that I had seen a car that you plugged in, and they denied it completely. Then I watched this movie tonight and there was the exact image I remember seeing of the electric car that Saturn had produced (and subsequently taken off the market). It made me sad just because it reinforced the idea in me that although the technology exists, people are getting to rich off of the status-quo to actually invest in the future. I sound like a hippy...

Speaking of which, here is my paraphrased quote from 30 Rock to end my post:
Liz Lemon: Do you know the post master general?
Jack: Yes, but we had a bit of a falling out.
Liz:?
Jack: It was over the Jerry Garcia stamp... If I wanted to lick a hippy I would just return Joan Baez's phone calls.

Wednesday is Hump Day

I remember when my grandpa told me that they would connect freight trains over a hump because it would keep them from moving too far away taking advantage of gravity. I never checked out the validity of this claim, but it always pops into my mind when it's Wednesday, because it's hump day (it refers to making it half way through the work week).

Today I feel good because I finished my first class of the semester, fingers crossed for a good grade to propel my school applications forward. Oh yeah, have I mentioned to the blogosphere (I hate that word) that I am trying to transfer schools again? I know, only an idiot would want to go through the process of applying to schools unnecessarily, but hey, one life to live and all that junk. As promised here is the link to the long cut of my final projectt. Upon watching it again after watching the short on so many times I can see that the pacing was really broken up and it is probably better that in the end I kept the short version...

Also, even though I've been extremely busy doing all sorts of work, papers, homework and painting plus a little studying on the side I've had a better than average music production week. For those of you who like your indie rock/sad songs more I suggest my personal think tank The Apes Planet. For those of you who like a little more lyric in your life I suggest The Second Shift. And for those of of you just want to strip naked and make babies to a thumping beat, I suggest Led Zeppelin... No, really I suggest The Crooks Club.

What's so awesome about all those suggestions you may ask? Well, they are all me.

My friend Elizabeth hit me off with word that her boyfriend and acquaintance of mine Will Johnson aka Gordon Voidwell may be receiving a major label record deal soon, and I am trying to ride his coattails to glory and fame by producing the album artwork. She described the record label as "You know that show Run's House? You know Reverend Run? Like his son? Jo-Jo? And he's in that one group and they got signed? It's that record label."

Check out his music. It has a well crafted array of synth with some nice bass slaps and a penchant for sound effects that really create a vibrant alien soundscape. One where Stevie Wonder is king and Prince is... well, a prince. Now that I am done with my class I can focus on my final project for Concepts in Visual Art, which has to deal with the phenomenon of synesthesia. It's a phenomenon I am experiencing.

Last thoughts:

Remember on my Junior spesh post where I talked about the terrible meal I cooked? Well, I made a different atrocity that is waiting at home for me tonight. Like a child with a bad report card, or a wife with a secret lover... I might have to divert to the bar.

December 08, 2008

Frank & George

Here it is... My mocumentary. It's the short version, but I'll get the long up one soon.

EDIT:

So apparently when it converted to YouTube the timing of the audio was out of synch with the footage. Here is a link for the high quality file.

I've been busy ma'am

I've been extremely busy with all sorts of junk, and by junk I mean final projects for school. Some of them are cool, some of them are funny, some of them are terrible and some of them are tests. But I'm trying my hardest on all of them. My new video is on the web, I will link it later, I'm getting kicked out of the room.

What else is new? It was my birthday, and I proceeded to drink way too much and spend my next day at work sleeping on a couch. But everyone keeps saying, "You only turn 21 once sonny-boy, and then it's down hill from there."

I figure the downhill includes liver damage.

In other news... I made a whole lot of new music this week, including a few things I'm going to try and record lyrics for now that the school year is winding to a close and I will actually have some time to sit in my basement and chill. Two of them are named after cities, one of them is a cover of LCD Soundsystem's "New York I Love You, But You're Bringing Me Down." I wonder if I can post them to Blogger? There has to be a way... Well, for now just check my Myspace page.

Twenty One

Today I turn twenty one years old. I also went to class all day and have a final in about two hours. Hurray! It is more difficult to realize that a birthday is a special day when you are busy being an adult and doing adult things.

Here are other people that recently completed a year of life:

Lucy Liu

Sarah Silverman

Treach from Naughty by Nature

Nelly Furtado

and last but not least, (well, I don't know, maybe least) Britney Spears.

My friend Alex Turns 21 on Thursday. Sam turns 21 on Friday I believe? Kurt turns 21 on Saturday. Drinking buddies for life.

This is a reminder to tell you all about my liver investment program, but first I have to go study for my final.
